Our Lord Loves Lilies!
Grandmas like to get one on Easter. Neighbors plant them in their backyards. What's not to love about them? But why does the Lord love them so much? I don't know! Could it be that their petals make the shape of a crucifix, much like cruciferous vegetables? (cabbage, broccoli). Lilies seem to be one of the few flowers that grow both wild and domesticated. Hmmm. An interesting contradiction there. In the English language, the Lily belongs to the Lily family. Not many flowers belong to a family of that says their name. There are over 4,000 species in the Lily family. There is even a variety called The Madonna Lily, in honor of the virgin Mother. The Hebrew word for lily means "six"-or the number that relates to people and is very relevant in the Bible. The lily has six petals-in groups of 3 each, much like a trinity. Even our Lord is called "The Lilly of the Valley". And the supposed mistress of Satan is named Lilith. Again, another intereting contradiction. But it doesn't stop there! The Lord mentions lilies, not once, but more in the Bible! An obvious comparison is when the lover in the Song of Songs "feeds among the lilies", or in other words, enjoys the pleasures of the woman he loves. And the Lord promises to take care of us because who doesn't labor or spin? The lilies! Of all his infinite creation of plant life, he chose the lilies to use in his illustration. But why? Who can know the mind of God?
